Joining a kitchen worktop will finish off your DIY kitchen project by connecting each section together for a clean and secure result. But to do this yourself it’s important you have the right equipment and follow the appropriate steps.

Below we’ve put together step-by-step instructions on how to join a kitchen worktop so you can have a culinary space you’re proud of.

Note: quartz, granite and stone worktops are different. These materials require specialist tools and expertise to cut, shape and join safely and accurately. For this reason, stone worktops should be measured, fabricated and installed by a professional, rather than attempting to join them yourself.

  • Before you join a kitchen worktop, you need to make sure you have equipment such as a worktop jig, router, worktop router bit, drill, clamps and more.

  • To join a kitchen worktop, you’ll need to measure and mark the joint, use a worktop jig and cut the joint, bring the pieces together before sealant to check they fit nicely together, apply sealant and join them together, and then clean away any excess sealant.

  • Ensure all your kitchen cabinets are level and securely fixed before joining your worktops and don’t join them together without sealing the joint as this can cause damage.

  • Quartz, granite or stone worktops should be cut and joined by a professional.

Joining a kitchen worktop

Step 1: measure and mark the joint

You need to decide where the two worktops will meet, making sure the joint is positioned over a cabinet rather than an unsupported area.

Step 2: prepare your worktop jig

Clamp a worktop jig securely to the worktop to guide the router to create precise cuts.

Step 3: cut the joint

Use a router bit to cut into each worktop and create a tight, interlocking joint.

Step 4: dry-fit the worktops

Bring the two pieces of worktop together without adhesive first to check that the joint closes properly and that they’re level.

Step 5: apply sealant

Apply a worktop jointing sealant to the cut edges.

Step 6: join the worktops underneath

Join the two worktops together using worktop connector bolts that should be fitted into the underside of the worktops. These can then be tightened gradually to pull the two sections together tightly.

Step 7: clean away excess sealant

Once the joint is tight, wipe away excess sealant before it cures.

FAQs

How do you join a kitchen worktop without a router?

Joining kitchen worktops without a router is possible. If you don’t have one, you need to use a worktop joining strip. Measure and cut the worktops using a circular or track saw and then check that the two pieces fit together neatly. A joining strip can then be fitted over the exposed edges to cover and protect the joint.

This method is simpler for DIY installation, but it may not provide as seamless a finish.

How do you hide worktop joints?

A few things you can do to make the joint less visible include:

  • Making sure you have a tightly fitted routed joint

  • Use a colour-matched sealant

  • Make sure both pieces are level and aligned

What is the best adhesive for kitchen worktop joints?

Use a specialist waterproof worktop jointing product for laminate, an appropriate waterproof wood adhesive for timber, and specialist epoxy/resin adhesive for stone worktops. Always follow the worktop manufacturer's recommendations.

Can you join different types of kitchen worktops?

You can, but it depends on the materials, their thickness and where the joint will be positioned. Combining materials requires careful planning and professional installation.
